A Lesson In Writing Non Fiction Successfully

By Walter Robinson

There are numerous styles in which to write, and the one chosen will have lots to do with the results. Find a style that's best suited to the individual. Also, if one is used to writing fiction, they will have to change their style somewhat for writing non fiction.

Writing with facts and figures all the time can make the text boring. Certainly, they cannot be avoided all the time, but there are ways in which to make it more interesting. For example, rather than the text reading eight glasses of water, write that the subject drank the recommended amount of water that day. It's plain to see that this can be much more interesting for the reader.

When composing material about historical events, put it into context properly. For instance, instead of giving the year, point out a particular era that was a big part of history. A good example would be to avoid typing 2000 BCE and instead write something more along the lines of during ancient Greek times when this event took place.

Obviously, hard facts can't be avoided all the time, but they can be squeezed in through the sidebars. These fact boxes are a great way to inject the facts that need to be there to bring truth to the material. Moreover, there are the details that are absolutely necessary and really count. This is always true, but especially so when selling travel material. Prospective tourists can envision themselves at a destination when the right words are chosen.

Right with true facts in mind, but make it marketable material. Use facts wisely by keeping the word count tight and avoiding the addition of too much fluff. In doing so, it will give value to the piece, and of course always reference sources, which will lead to the reader trusting the material while providing depth to it.

Today's reality writing is about high quality written material on virtually any subject that is not only meant to be informative, but also entertaining. Therefore, it's crucial to find a subject that absolutely fascinates the intended reader. For that to happen, it's important for that subject to be interesting to the writer as well.

With regards to focus, one must choose which way to go. There are narrow focused pieces and broad focused pieces. The former should provide great depth and details and requires plenty of research. The latter will likely sacrifice many of the details but will be complemented with much more interest.

Having said all that, it's also important to research properly. Today, there is a slew of material available online, but not all of it is authentic or will meet the standards necessary. Therefore, be sure to choose resources that are trusted. To write good material, the writer will have to spend most of the time researching and reading other work, and much less time actually writing it. Following this advice should facilitate the entire process and ensure that the project will be completed. There's nothing worse than getting lost in a project for one reason or another.
